Final Project Proposal

1. The conceptual basis for my work is illustrating heritage in a unique way, which also speaks to the frail nature of time.
2. I will be taking old family photos and scanning them into Photoshop.
3. Even though she was a high school student, and not a professional artist at the time of her project, the prime artistic inspiration for my project is Grace Pickford.

4. This project will challenge me in several ways. First, I will attempt to scan old pictures without losing massive amounts of quality, realizing that some quality is inevitably lost in a transfer like that. It will also challenge me in the ways I think about presentation, for I am attempting to present my work in a very different way than I ever thought I would.
5. For my final prints, I will have one big photo of a bare tree branch on a large print, luster type paper. I am not, at this time, sure what the actual size for this image will need to be. I will also print photographs of my grandmother, my mother, and myself on transparency sheets. These will be about a third of the size of the tree branch. I anticipate these "found" images to be low in saturation and vibrancy, as they are quite old. My own images will be altered to match these styles. I will then either find an old overhead projector or build my own homemade projector in order to project these images onto the photo of the tree branch which will hang on the wall in front of the projector. Therefore, this project is a pseudo family tree project (albeit, on a smaller scale).
6. If you have any access to overhead projectors, I would love instructions for borrowing one temporarily. If at all possible, I would also like to borrow one of the digital cameras from you over Thanksgiving break, though that is not imperative for the completion of my project.

The Photograph as an Art Object summary

In Felicity Cole's article, she talks about several different artists who use unconventional methods to display photography. In the cases of Frank Eugene, Gertrude Kasebier, Edward Steichen, and Julie Cockburn, artists sometimes do not even use their own work, but instead uniquely display found photographs. Others utilize sculpture, embroidery, and painting in their work. Still others decide to place their work in photo albums to elicit a more personal response to these images. Finally, when displaying their work in such unique, difficult to reproduce ways, the artists choose to do a limited release of their work, and only a few people will ever get to experience the full effect.

Build-a-Photo

Project #4 Proposal

For my next project, I aim to make a series of three pic stitches. My first pic stitch will be a self portrait. The left side will be a business/formal representation of myself. The right side will be a much more informal representation, a before and after, if you will. I will then do the same style image for my next two pic stitches, though the subjects for these portraits will be two of my friends. Finally, I will create a grid image of different aspects of a typical day in class/work in contrast to a night out with friends. These will not include full body pictures. Rather, they will be much more random, candid images (i.e. a closeup of a smile, a hand holding a pen, etc.).

"On Photography" Summary

Photography is a way of looking at the world and capturing moments that one wishes to remember. It is a type of reminiscence, a nostalgic act. Photography is also unique in that it is very selective and calculated, which is much different than video recording. Furthermore, photography is a type of voyeurism in which the photographer is the master of the situation (Sontag, p. 10). Photography is a universal form of language, which can be read even by those who have no other language skills. It can be used in many different domains, including anthropology, journalism, forensics, etc.

Photo 18

Can't decide which image I like better. I feel like the rainbow is more apparent in the second image, but the first image has more definition.
